A souvenir is not, properly understood, a keepsake. It is a refusal — a refusal to let what mattered be carried only in memory, where it thins with each generation that did not witness it.

The 350th Shaheedi Purab of Sahib Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji asks something of those who commemorate it: that the act of remembering be made durable.
